What are palindromes?

Funny, Phonetics No Comments »

What are palindromes? They are words or phrases that read the same backward as forward. The word “bib” is a palindrome for example, as is the phrase “Madam, I’m Adam.” Look carefully at the latter and you’ll see that the letters are in the same order in both directions. The word, by the way, is derived from the Greek “palíndromos,” meaning “running back again.”

International Phonetic Alphabet

Phonetics No Comments »

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a system of phonetic notation based on the Latin alphabet, devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of spoken language. The IPA is used by foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech pathologists and therapists, singers, actors, lexicographers, and translators.

The IPA is designed to represent only those qualities of speech that are distinctive in spoken language: phonemes, intonation, and the separation of words and syllables. To represent additional qualities of speech such as tooth-gnashing, lisping, and sounds made with a cleft palate, an extended set of symbols called the Extensions to the IPA is used.

Occasionally symbols are added, removed, or modified by the International Phonetic Association. As of 2008, there are 107 distinct letters, 52 diacritics, and 4 prosody marks in the IPA proper.

[s] 60 Years Of 11+ Exam Ends Today?

Thousands of primary seven pupils across the Province have this morning sat what could be the last ever 11-plus examination.

More than 15,000 children completed the final part of this year’s selection test, amid growing political uncertainty over the future of academic testing.

The Minister overseeing the reformation of the transition between primary and secondary education is yet to provide definite plans on a way forward.

Caitriona Ruane has continued to come under fire from teachers, parents and fellow MLAs for her failure to provide details of a concrete replacement to the contentious exam.

Today marked the sixtieth year of the 11-plus exam in Northern Ireland, and as the axe begins to fall on the process, current primary six pupils appear to have been left in the balance as to what system will be in place for them next year.

However, academic selection will still be allowed in certain circumstances.

Some grammar schools will hold their own selection tests next year.

These exams are likely to take place at the grammar school rather than the pupil’s own classroom.

This method is seen as a compromise for schools that have boycotted the Minister’s stance.

Ms Ruane has permitted the schools to use English and maths tests, set and marked by the CCEA examining board.

Half of grammar school candidates will be selected through testing in the first year, with this process eventually being phased out over the following three years.

Parents with children not sitting selection tests will be told to make an informed decision on the school best suited to their child’s needs.

This will be based on a compiled ‘Pupil Profile’, which will be built up by primary school teachers.

Problems could arise when parents, who want their children to receive a grammar school education, have to voluntarily choose between secondary schools for their child.

Earlier this month, primary seven pupils completed the first part of the hour-long exam, which tests candidates on English, maths and science.

Results are posted out to pupils in February.

Smart moves / ‘Умные’ движения

[s] Smart moves

It won’t surprise fitness freaks to learn that aerobic exercise does more than raise the heart rate: It lifts the spirit and builds confidence. But many brain researchers believe that something else happens, too. Just as exercise makes the bones, muscles, heart, and lungs stronger, researchers think that it also strengthens important parts of the brain.

Research suggests that aerobic exercise helps you learn new things and remember old information better. Aerobic exercise sends more blood to the brain and it also feeds the brain with substances that developed new nerve connections. If the exercise has complicated movements like dance steps or basketball moves, the brain produces even more nerve connections, the better the brain can process all kinds of informations.

Scientists still don’t fully understand the relationship between exercise and brain power. For the moment, people just have to trust that exercise is helping them to learn or remember. Scientific research clearly shows, however, that three or more workouts a week are good for you. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, for example, shows that walking four to five miles (6.5 to 8km) an hour for 45 minutes five times a week helps your live longer. So don’t be a couch potato. Get out there and do something!
